About Ballarat East
The Town
The oldest site in Ballarat, Ballarat East is the 4th most populated suburb in the area and is filled with an abundance of incredible highlights.
With a history dating back to the 1840s when it was known as Black Hill Flats, the suburb changed drastically with the discovery of gold in 1851, bringing with it an influx of immigrants. The suburb was also the location for the Eureka Rebellion (or Eureka Stockade as it is also known), which was an armed conflict that took place in 1854 by gold miners in response to an arbitrary tax enforced by the government. In 2022, a ‘Pathway of Remembrance’ at the Eureka Stockade Memorial Park was unveiled to mark the event. Today, Ballarat East is a welcoming and vibrant suburb dominated by picturesque historical and heritage dwellings dating all the way back to the 1860s and through the 1940s.
