About Drumcondra
Drumcomdra is the smallest suburb in Geelong and one of the smallest in Victoria. With only 9 streets in total and around 200 houses. Some of Geelong's most-prized and valuable real estate is located here.
Residents say it’s one of the best suburbs in Geelong, full of gorgeous period homes and it’s well located near Geelong CBD, which is only 10-15 minutes away by bike ride down the waterfront or 8 minutes by car.
Drumcondra Location
It is located approximately 64kms from the capital Melbourne covering an area of 0.258 square kilometres. Drumcondra boundaries are the Melbourne Road, Glenleith Avenue, The Esplanade and Bell Parade. It is classified as a "block" with its main road being Beach Parade. The suburb is bordered by Rippleside Park to the north, Corio Bay to the east (for the rising sun), and to the south, the city and Geelong's fine waterfront restaurants. To the west, the highway to Melbourne borders the suburb. The Esplanade at Drumcondra is elevated and affords superb views across the bay.
History of Drumcondra
The suburb was named after Drumcondra, an inner suburb of Dublin, Ireland. The area was established with the first house built on Glenleith Avenue in 1912.
The mansion Lunan House is located in the Drumcondra; it was built of Barrabool sandstone for wool merchant James Strahan in 1849. In later years it became a teacher's college before being converted back into a private house. The house is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register.
Drumcondra Sporting & Recreation
The popular Bob Mcgovan Path along the waterfront of Drumcondra links to the neighbouring suburbs of Rippleside and Geelong. It’s a great spot to walk or ride with views across the bay. Being such a small suburb, there aren’t many parks or sporting grounds; however, within walking distance or a short drive, you’ll find very popular parks, sporting grounds and beaches.
