About Coburg
History
Originally named Pentridge in 1840, the suburb was renamed Coburg in 1870 to honor the Duke of Edinburgh's visit, a member of the royal house of Saxe-Coburg. The mid-1800s saw Coburg's growth with farms and bluestone quarrying, drawing new settlers during the Victorian gold mining boom. Coburg’s most notable landmark, Pentridge Prison, was established in 1850 and housed infamous criminals like Ned Kelly. Decommissioned in 1997, the prison has since been transformed into an urban village featuring luxury apartments, boutique shops, a Palace cinema, and various eateries.
