About Chelsea
Chelsea is one of several suburbs outside the Melbourne CBD and inner ring that has experienced impressive growth in recent years. Despite its many charms, it is still affordable and is widely considered an overlooked gem among bayside suburbs.
Chelsea lifestyle
Chelsea has a long stretch of pristine beaches and offers an idyllic lifestyle. A relaxed community vibe sets the scene in this south-eastern pocket – the water is calm and inviting, and iconic beach boxes and a picturesque pier give the shoreline its unique character. In Chelsea, older residents mix with newcomer professionals and young families eager to buy into a great lifestyle in an affordable location.
Chelsea property styles
Chelsea and its surrounds are eclectic in terms of housing styles, from turn-of-the-century cottages, 1920s Tudor-style homes and mid-century beach houses to modern upmarket townhouses and a mix of 1960s and 70s apartments and villas. The clutch of absolute beachfront properties are, of course, the jewel in the Chelsea crown.
Chelsea schools
There are many school options to choose from in the surrounding area, from religious schools to public primary schools and private schools. They include Chelsea Primary School, Westall Secondary College - LEEP Chelsea, St Joseph's School Chelsea, Haileybury, Cornish, Lighthouse, St Bede’s, Mentone Grammar and Kilbreda. Monash University’s Peninsula Campus is about a 10-minute drive away.
Chelsea shopping & eating out
You’ll find cafes, restaurants and takeaway options scattered along the main strip on Nepean Hwy- great for brunch or some fish & chips down on the beach.
Chelsea is bustling with businesses that include supermarkets, butchers, a newsagent, pharmacy and hair salons. Larger department stores and a cinema are in the Southland Westfield shopping centre, which is only 20-minutes away.
Chelsea's business district is centred on the Nepean Highway, which runs parallel to the shore. A railway line, community facilities, and residential areas may be found on the highway's eastern side. The western side of the roadway is mostly lined with stores, with a narrow strip of houses bordering the ocean foreshore behind them.
Chelsea sports & recreation
Bicentennial Park has a great playground, skate park, dog park & BBQ facilities, extensive walking and bike trails around Edithvale Wetlands, bird watching, and several gyms.
Community sports clubs around the area cater to football, cricket, tennis, bowling and horse-riding enthusiasts. Chelsea is home to a number of parks and recreational facilities. Victory Park is located at the end of The Strand and offers a playground as well as a view of the beach. Bicentennial Park,,located on the corner of Thames Promenade and Scotch Parade, has athletic facilities as well as wilderness walking trails, a lovely playground with a dog park and barbecue facilities, and the nearby Edithvale Wetlands is a magnet for hikers and bird watchers.
The beach in Chelsea is a long, unbroken length of beachfront that offers magnificent views of the Mornington Peninsula to the south. A 300-meter stretch of beach around the local surf lifesaving club has been proclaimed a no-boating zone, making it perfect for safe swimming in the protected bay waters. A short pier that extends into the water may be seen a bit further south. Low sand dunes line the beach's shoreline, with groupings of colourful bathing boxes nestled among natural coastal grasses viewing the ocean.
In neighbouring Bonbeach, there's a country club and golf course, and you're only a 30-minute drive from the food, wine and natural beauty of the Mornington Peninsula.
Chelsea transport & accessibility
The suburb of Chelsea is on the Frankston rail network, which was recently upgraded to improve safety, reduce congestion and offer more frequent services. Hop on an express train, and you’ll be at Flinders Street Station in about 45 minutes. Numerous bus routes connect Chelsea to key hubs such as Dandenong and Airport West.
