Situated at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges, the population of Dandenong was counted at 30,127 in the 2021 census.
The bustling Dandenong Market and the Dandenong Plaza retail centre are two of the city of Dandenong's primary shopping destinations. Within the block surrounded by Robinson Street, Foster Street, and McCrae Street, a large number of on-street stores face the broad boulevard of Lonsdale Street. Local retail centres can be found on Outlook Drive, Brady Road, and Menzies Avenue in Dandenong North.
The only officially recognised Afghan and Indian precincts in Melbourne are in Dandenong. Little India is located along Foster Street between the railway station and Thomas Street, while the Afghan Bazaar is located along Thomas Street between Scott Street and Walker Street. There are a variety of grocery stores, clothing stores, entertainment venues, and restaurants in each of these cultural zones.
